So back to the paint store to grab a few more samples. Snowbound was too stark, origami felt cold-ish. ![]() I bought two sample pots and painted little swatches on several different walls (origami white and snowbound, if you’re curious). We initially narrowed down our choices just based on the Sherwin Williams paint chips. Each color looks different depending on lighting, so a white that looks great in a friend’s house in Kansas City might not be the right choice for mine in Seattle. Some whites are cool (with blue undertones) others are warm (with yellow undertones), then there are those with pinky hues or grayish tints, bright whites that feel institutional, creamy whites that read yellow. So white was the obvious choice.īut have you seen how many different white paints there are?! It’s slightly obnoxious and overwhelming. It’s a fine color, but started feeling dark – especially during our dreary Pacific Northwest winters when the sun doesn’t show up much. ![]() We moved into our home 8 years ago and the walls and ceilings were all the same khaki-ish color. One peek at my living area pinterest board and you’ll instantly see what my eye is drawn to. I’ve been craving clean, fresh, light, bright. I felt ridiculous going back and forth, painting swatches, staring at five whites that looked exactly the same and yet I also didn’t want to waste money on a color that we didn’t love. There are a million bigger issues out there than choosing paint colors, I am well aware. And when you’re paying a bunch of money to have nearly every wall in your house painted, you really, really want to make sure you pick the right color. ![]() Yay for nice people who paint houses for a living! They do such amazing work and they are quick. I’ll tell you what, I may never go back to painting myself again. Besides the difficulty factor, it would also take us weeks, and we just don’t have time with kids and soccer and work and the holidays coming up. But the places that needed new paint the most – the stairway, ceilings, hallways and tall walls in the living room – were not areas I was excited about working on. I really don’t mind it and do a decent job. Well, once we pulled up all the carpet and existing hardwoods downstairs in preparation for the floor install, we decided it was the right time to paint the walls. We made our final selection, placed the order and have let them acclimate in the house for the past few weeks (sneak peeks coming!). I posted about our flooring options and it was helpful to run through all of the choices and hear what you had to say. ![]() In the meantime, we’re living in a construction zone with all of our furniture moved out and no stove to cook on (which just means eating out or at friends’ houses and I’m not complaining about that!). The floors were ripped up last week, the walls needed a fresh coat of paint and the new floors will be installed this week. We’ve been waiting years to do a few big projects to our house and finally took the plunge. Please please please don’t pick a shade from this list without actually seeing it in your space first. Our house is a disaster. Just how do you choose the perfect white paint?!? Today we broke down 10 white paints we love to work with from Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore and Behr. White is exactly like gray and all its 50 shades…and more! There are so many shades of white it can be a daunting task to find the perfect one for your space. While some people see white paint as just that, white paint, we’re here to assure you it’s far from that. Know the perfect white paints for your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and other parts of your home. ![]() Connect the different components that make the base of the strike zone. At the end of the game, the winner is the team with the most runs.Games may also be played in a set time limit, often 55 minutes. There are two ways to be out in Wiffle Ball.Every player who makes it round the bases scores a run for the team.Hitting past the triple zone is a home run. Hitting the ball into the single zone enables the player to advance one base, hitting into the double zone enables them to advance two bases, and a triple three bases.Unlike baseball, there is no stealing bases, and movement between bases can only be done on a scoring shot.Failure to hit the ball within these three pitches will result in the batter being out. Each batter faces three balls from the pitcher, and must attempt to hit the ball into one of the scoring zones. To decide who bats and who fields, a coin should be tossed or some other way of deciding should be done such as a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.Wiffle Ball teams can number between 1 and 10 players. Some Wiffle Ball leagues allow tied games and the points are shared equally by the two teams whereas others will insist on one more innings each, with the highest score being declared the winner. Should the number of runs be the same at the end of the game then the game is drawn. Once both teams have completed their agreed number of innings (usually six), the team with the highest number of runs will be declared the winner. Each player that completes the circuit and runs past the final base scores a run for the team. Hitting the ball into the single zone enables the player to advance one base, hitting into the double zone enables them to advance two bases, and a triple three bases. The equipment needed for Wiffle Ball is minimal. The game of Wiffle Ball itself also has an overriding objective, and that is to be a miniature game of baseball that requires very little equipment and can be played in a wide variety of places safely and enjoyably. The object for each team in Wiffle Ball is to score more runs than their opponent, thus winning the game. ![]() A World Whiffle Ball Championship has been played since 1980. Traditionally, a potential suitor would court a young woman in the home, under the watchful eye of her parents. With this newfound female independence in the public sphere, dating norms began to shift dramatically as well, further setting the stage for the Hatpin Panic. As a result, women were walking on the street alone for the first time, commuting to work or spending their hard-earned wages in restaurants or shops in the city. For the first time, jobs outside the home became available to young women in cities, such as piecemeal work in factories. Gender Politics Transform During Height of Hat PinsĪs ladies’ large hat pins became more and more commonplace at the turn of the 20th century, social norms were changing significantly. Gorgeous and intricate designs of natural phenomena, such as birds or insects, could be found on more expensive hat pins, while working classes usually adorned their pins with buttons or beads. ![]() High-end pins were adorned with decorations made of amber, coral, ivory, enamel, pearl, gold, and other materials. They were initially crafted with silver, but soon hat pins were created with brass, glass, and porcelain. Hat pins helped secure the wearer’s hat to her head by interweaving with her hair. Hat pins were on average 8 inches long, though some could reach a foot in length. The answer to the modern woman’s predicament in this era? Beautiful and sharp hat pins. With these large, elaborate hats becoming all the rage in women’s fashion, the ability to keep one’s hat and hair in place during the day became increasingly important. as demand for these ornate hats reached unprecedented levels. In fact, the bird populations of some species of local birds, such as the egret, were decimated across the U.S. To represent one’s social status, a prominent woman may purchase a hat with jewelry or feathers of rare birds atop it. Toward the end of the 19th century, women’s hats gradually grew in size as fashion trends dictated larger and larger women’s headwear. Large Hat Pins Gain Popularity in Ladies’ Fashion Sound familiar? While women today fight for the right to bring predators to justice through the #MeToo movement, the source of the 1900s woman’s power while out in public lay with the humble hat pin. ![]() But it wouldn’t be long before male lawmakers sought to limit the power these women now wielded in public spaces during the Hatpin Panic.Īs a result, women held protests, organized marches and shared impassioned speeches in an effort to rebuke these imposed limits on the use of hat pins and their ability to keep themselves safe outside the home. For the first time, women posed a physical threat to men through using hat pins. With the newfound use of the hat pin as a weapon, women suddenly found themselves with the ability to defend themselves against predatory men, called mashers, on the street and on public transportation. In their early stages, these behemoths of rock stacked on rock had, alongside the iconic crenel and merlon, relatively thin walls, simple gates and one or two baileys. ![]() Good examples of these are the crusader castles in the Holy Land or the English castles in Wales. Stone castles of the High Middle Ages were a direct result of private warfare among European barons and especially large-scale military campaigns waged ‘twixt puissant princes, kings, emperors, archbishops and popes. In Late Antiquity and much of the Early Middle Ages, stone castles of this sort, with their counter-embattled ramparts and donjons that speared the firmament, had never existed before, although Africa and Asia since ancient times had sported many stone fortresses of similar design. This is when we start to see the classic stone castle we love so much in Disney movies and Game of Thrones, especially as William the Norman brought his architects with him to the British Isles, transforming the Anglo-Saxon landscape with Frankish castles for his vassals. Siege-works such as the trebuchet and battering ram operated by these larger armies rendered motte and bailey castles rudimentary and new innovations in defensive design were needed. Governance in the High Middle Ages became more competent and organized, which meant armies, with their commissariats and battering-trains, became larger. These wooden splendors of architecture, however, would peter out of use as the technology of warfare marched onward. Also, guests traveling from afar, if the lord of the estate knew them or indeed if the traveler was willing to pay a fee, could be welcomed inside for hospitality as a hôte. Motte and bailey castles, much like the later stone castles we will soon discuss, were typically multifunctional, allowing the lord who sometimes took residence in the keep and his serfs and bondsmen who lived in and around the bailey, not to mention the cottars who lived in the immediate area, security from banditry and competing strongmen. These were primarily constructed out of wood and so very few are still extant, but the mottes they were built on, earthworks resembling would-be burial mounds for giants, can still be seen from the sky today alongside the fosses that surround them. Moreover, Julius Caesar became famous for his use of contravallations and circumvallations when besieging a fortress in Gaul, which not only kept his besiegers safe from sorties but safe from outside relief forces as well, preventing all egression in or out of the beleaguered stronghold.Īs the Early Middle Ages neared closer to the High Middle Ages, Celtic and Germanic peoples began to experiment further with their own defensive structure designs, and as one traveled through the European landscape they would see many of what we call motte and bailey castles. In finite terms, these early defensive structures in Europe were a result of foreign invaders traveling into new lands and wishing to keep their conquered possessions secure by having safe bases of operation where soldiers could quickly respond to uprisings and enemy campaigns. Even some famous medieval cities originally grew up within Roman walls. While Western Rome was declining during the Migration Period of the Early Middle Ages, many of the forts and stone walls the Romans had built in Europe remained intact, and most of them were repurposed by Celtic and Germanic peoples. Such structures included walled barracks for the armies to sleep in and watchtowers known as burgus for defending roads and bridges, precursors to the Scottish pele which encompassed the border ‘twixt Scotland and England during the time of Robert the Bruce. In Late Antiquity, the Romans were masters of building defensive structures within several days while on campaign in Gaul and the British Isles. ![]() This is because the defensive capabilities of the castle were its main reason for existing, and the castle needed to keep up with siege-craft technology which was evolving just as rapidly throughout the medieval period. Castles throughout the Middle Ages went through immense evolution, especially their defensive structures. ![]() We only list some of these package systems here because they are Therefore you should report issues to the packagersįirst, before reporting to the GIMP team.
